enjoyed the site. United with the 557th IPCT in march '71 from the 25th Div, 66th IPCT. I visited the 47th to see a member who had transferred into the unit from the 66th IPCT. As I walked up to the Plt Orderly room out of the door came a home-town frien /school mate. His name is Jerry D. Collins from Breckenridge, Texas. I served in Nam from June 66-67 and again in Dec 69-June 71. Again a good site. Welcome Home!!

VERY GOOD WEB SITE. I OWN AND LOVE GSDs, AND KNOW YOU ALL LOVE THEM TOO. THEY SHOULD BE RECOGNIZED FOR THEIR SACRIFICES UNDER DESPERATE CONDITIONS. BUT TRUE TO THEIR NOBLE NATURE THEY ALWAYS CARRY OUT THEIR DUTY WITHOUT SO MUCH AS A WHIMPER. KEEP UP THE G OD WORK. IF POSSIBLE, E-MAIL ME WITH INFO ON HOW TO BECOME A MEMBER. I AM NOT A SCOUT DOG VETERAN, BUT I AM INTERESTED. THANKS. JEFF JOHNSTON

Just an animal lover and got into this when we lost our Greta. Made a website and it has taken a life of its own. I am going for the ride and landing up with War dogs. Made a link for war dogs and getting more and more involved in their tremendous contribution to our lives. So much out there to read and learn and trying to involve others to become aware. Good luck...great work. your friend in NJ, Louise (Bob too) Krause Cape May, NJ

Great Job. These pages have brought back many memiories. Some good and some not so good. With this site I have made contact with fellow members that I have always though about. I will be traveling to Ft. Benning this week-en for the dedication for the WAR DOGS. This is the first event of this kind that I have attended since I left Viet Nam 6July 71(WIA). My dog King was killed 3July71 and I was wounded. I have many times wanted to go to WALL in Washington and I have not make the trip even tho it is only 60 miles from where I live. Someday soon I will make that journey. I have a lot of friends whose names are there. Many who were not handlers. I was lucky and survived some are still suffering. May God Bless all of you and Welcome Home. Frankie

I was looking at the sight trying to find information about WWII scout dogs as I am currently enrolled in a WWII History class and chose to complete my assigned research paper on war dogs. I am h w ever having a lot of difficulty finding information on canine corp. units. I you have any suggestions or information could you please pass it on to me. I chose the topic because I to am a police canine handler. Your web sight is something I will pass on to other handlers I know. Thank You for your time and be careful out there.

I grew up in Okinawa during the Vietnam War. At the time we had a German Shephard dog, and GI's used to stop by to admire him. It was hot and humid, and the guys used to offer him water and just talk to him. My mother said "Americans must sure love dogs ", but now I understand it wasn't just "love of dogs". I live in Los Angeles now and I still "love" dogs - I have 6, one of them a German Shephard and another a Lab. I'm really anxious to know what happened to the dogs that were left behind. More Ameri ans need to know what went on there. Is it OK if I include a link to your site on my Home Page?

I felt the need to write and let you know what a tremendous job you've done on this site. My brother John Pinezaddleby is a member of the 47th IPSD, he returned recently from the War Dog Memorial in Riverside, CA. It was pretty intense for him, but he f lt it was a road he needed to walk alone. My heart goes out to all of you, my brothers who had to leave your dogs behind. But, we all know they are still very much loved, and will always be remembered, not only by you, the handlers, but by us family mem ers, who are so grateful to them too. Thank you Bert and Jonathan for keeping in touch with John, I am truly grateful for you all!!! I just wanted to write and let you all know that. Thank you so much, Mary Anne Zumwalt

My father served in WWII CBI, War Dog Detachment. He served in the 475th Quarter Master Core. His unit just held their last reunion at Fort Robinson, NE. He is one of the few men still living. His dog's name was Rex, tatoo# R86. He brought his dog home with him when he was discharged and he lived with him until my father started college. Then Rex went to live with a woman, because he could not be home alone while my father was in school. I guess the reason I am writing this is because I was watching the Discovery Channel, Sunday July 9th and the show was about War Dogs of Vietnam. I was so heart broken to hear the stories of the men and dogs that served and how the dogs weren't able to r turn to the United States with their best friends. Is there a memorial for the War Dogs of Vietnam? I would like very much if someone could respond to my e-mail regarding this. I just wanted to write to let someone know how truly moved I am to know that our best friends saved so many lives sacrificing their own. That truly is the definition of a BEST FRIEND.

Gentlemen, I saw a program on Discovery Channel devoted to the dog handlers and their scout dogs during the Vietnam War. It was one of the most moving documentaries I have ever seen. I want to send my sincere and heartfelt gratitude to the men and their s ecial dogs. Such courage and devotion in impossible circumstances is hard to fathom.

I love the sight. About the most it did to me, is make me question my parents about the whereabouts of one of the German Shepherds I grew up with. I first heard of this unit on the Discovery Channel July 8, 2000. They have showed several episodes of a sh w called "War Dogs". They portray the dogs as the heroes of the Vietnam War. I would love to see more stories from the troops, as the shows have given. Lots of stories of the heroics of the dogs, and the connections between the dogs and their handlers.< r>

What a great site! Very user friendly and well organized. I thought VDHA had a good site but the 47th passed it up. I especially enjoyed the historical section that contained the letter from Lowell Rosnau. He was very informative and humorous at the same ime. I liked the part about the sled dog camp. Great Duty? A cow and generator? What a great gentleman, to share history with the 47th. Keep up the good work.

This so wonderful to find this site. I was turned on to it by Ms.Beth Franz Ballard. She informed me of her introduction to the VDHA and that she had been a war dog donor when she was only 19 years old. From her I found out about the war dog memorial in Riverside, Ca which was spear-headed by Mayor of Corona, Ca. Mr. Jeff Bennet, owner of Nature's Recipe dog food. Interestingly, I happen to be a resident of Corona, Eventhough I'm now in Kansas with my a ing father. I am the Vice-president of Oxyfresh World Wide, Inc and we carry a line of pet/dog hygiene and nutritional products. Our hottest product line are a pet oral hygiene solution and gel which can be added to the dog's water and rubbed along the gum line resp ctively. My rep in PA turned me on to MS Ballard and to John Burnham's book: Dog Tags of Courage. What a gripping text that is! Every handler must read it. I never went to Viet Nam. Nor did the other 9 guys that were all in the same "off-leash" class at Ft. Benning. This was 1971. I had completed two of the three months of "on-leash" and then Duke and I had the opportunity to train as an "off-leash" team f r three more months. I never expected to take Duke with me. I had always been told that I would be provided one of the combat experienced dogs already in Nam. My orders were for Ben Wha (spelling ?) and after leave I showed up at Oakland Overseas Replacement Station, April, 27 1971. Two days later, my departure group was called out and we assembled on the basket ball court, lunch and then reassembly. Then something amazing happened. From that high platform, The "Old Man" announced that the rumored de-escalation of the war in Viet N m had become a reality and that the following 43 personnel are being diverted to Europe. After 2 week in holding in Ft Dix I became a sentry dog handler in Muenster bei Dieburg close to Darmstadt, Germany. The totally unbelievable thing is that the 9 of us that were in Benning together stayed together all the way through our final duty in Germany!! No two soldiers stayed together that long, let alone 9!!!!! When I was diverted from Viet Nam I experienced a strange dicotomy of emotions. I was so overwhelmed that I was spared from that combat experience and at the same time there was heart-felt disappointment at being deprived the opportunity to do what I had for five months trained to do.

What can I say guys...,'great site'...that doesn't seem enough. But it is! I was a dog handler back in the early sixties and was in and out of the service before Nam became a 'household' word. I know about dogs...the service...working posts but I'll never fully understand what you went through...but thanks for sharing this part of your life with me.

I'm working on a book about the 47th--the importance of the dogs to the men and vice versa, concentrating on 1968-69. It has been extremely meaningful for me to meet some of you guys via phone and email. Thanks. Question of the week--Anybody remember anyt ing about Marvin Pearce's dog Prince (can't find tattoo #)? Where did he go after being with Pearce? My ears are open to comments about this or anything else you want to tell me about the life and times of the 47th and their dogs. I believe Bert Hubble, J nathan Wahl, maybe even Rusty Allen will vouch for my credibility. I write about animals for Country Living magazine and will have a piece on war animals in November 99. Thanks for any comments.

Great site. I knew several guys from the 47th. One had a dog that just hated the Vietnamese. One day when we were with the 2/327th near FSB Tomahawk, the Scout Dog would not leave the Kit Carsen Scout we had with us alone. The guy kept getting his ass bit by the dog. This dog really hated the "Scout". Seems the dog sensed something and later found out the "Scout" had a chicom grenade in his ruck sack. The dog took some really good chunks out of his ass. Also knew Charlie Fisher (a dog handeler). Charlie came to work for the papers with us at Phu Bai. Keep up the good work. Hope to hear from others. Welcome home. I know because I also came with them and have it on records retrieved form St. Louis record center when there in JULY 97 with your reunion. Also know we came to Phu Bai which they had been at for about 2 months. 2. Entry of 6/1/70 re: dog 112M = "Dug" should move to 6/1/71 per Tom Mitchell. McCoy, Ashcraft, and White all confirm DUG alive in Fall 70 when they Derosed. 3. Bill Sawyer Exact DEROS = 7/10/70 have from my DD 214. THANKS FOR SET THIS DIARY UP; special thanks for updating it.

Dog guys of the 47th- Got your link from LZ Sally guestbook. I always felt better with the dogs around humping the ashau valley with our infantry co. I never knew the different SD platoon names 30 years ago but believe me all of us grunts were happy to ha e you working with us. While walking 2nd man behind the SD handler and his dog Ebony, I had one great experience. They were walking point, with me close behind, in the Ashau, circa spring 1969, when the dog froze in her tracks refusing to go any further. To this day I still believe she stopped us from walking into an ambush that day. I don't know if Ebony was with the 47th but I will never forget her beauty, friendliness and intelligence. She wasn't a big german shepard, probably 90 lbs, and completely bl ck. She was one magnificent animal. Welcome home brothers. Jeff-linedog/Alpha Co./1st/501st Inf/LZ Sally

As a fellow scout dog handler, I commend you for an outstanding and very informative site. I served with the 39th IPSD from 5/68 to 5/69, and was probably at Ft. Benning during, at least, some of the time the 47th was in training there. I was in "dog sc ool" there from January to March, 1968. After 30 days leave, I shipped over from Travis AFB in Oakland, CA the first week of May 68. Your site brought back some pleasant, and yes, some unpleasant memories of my year "in country". Would like to hear fro some of you if you get the chance. Keep up the good work and "Welcome Home".

This is my first time on the Internet. To Randy and Bert, You fellows are doing a great job, keep up the good work. I was in Vietnam from 8/70 - 7/71. My dogs names were: FANT (K027) and BUD (64A7). I remember a fellow Dog Handler named "Sonny" (Paul ichael Miller) who used to go out on missions with me. I also remember a fellow handler named Dennis Robbins. He later became a clerk in our unit. I can't remember all of the names nor can I connect faces with names. However, I would like to get in co tact with any of the former handlers that served with the 47th IPSD from 1970-1971. WELCOME HOME!

Jonathan, It's super to see Scout Dogs and their handlers on the web. While names escape me, I met at least 2 dogs and their handlers while serving with Co. B 1/327th Infantry, 101st Airborne in 1969. We associated those big German Shepherds with our own pets "back in the World". I suspect we irritated the handlers by paying considerably more attention to the dogs - trying to feed and pet them - than you guys liked. And I'm sure I'm not the only one wh drove handlers nuts by asking endless questions about how you cared for the animals, what they ate, how you trained etc. But what stands out most in my memory of Scout Dogs and those of you handling them was the professionalism in your work. Well Done then, and well done with this site! Mark Webb

Glad to see an IPSD unit web site. I went over as off-leash in Feb 1970. In July I was Brigade Soldier of Month, became 39th training NCO. My dog, Blitz 56A4 was transfered to 59th, later KIA. Serving as scout dog handler was an honor, being with an ai borne unit another. I am fortunate to survive in one piece and I remember those not so fortunate. Scout Dog Handlers were a special group of men and dogs. My children are proud to say how I served. My memories of 1970 are intense, if not as specific i detail as I now wish. Welcome home to all Vietnam Vets. Good luck with your web site!
